Fireplace Cleaning in Pasadena, Deep Clean with Safety Check

A homeowner in Bradbury called us last winter after lighting a fire and noticing something off. Fine mortar dust had collected on the firebox floor, and a faint smoke smell lingered in the living room hours after the fire was out. She walked outside, looked up, and saw a visible crack running across the chimney crown. The camera inspection revealed exactly what we expected. Water had penetrated through the crown fracture and loosened mortar in three vertical joints along the upper flue. The firebox itself had heavy 2nd-degree creosote deposits baked onto the rear wall and smoke shelf, along with accumulated ash that hadn't been cleaned in at least four seasons. The damper frame had surface corrosion from moisture exposure. Under NFPA 211 standards, this rated as a Level 2 inspection finding: the flue was functional but compromised, and the structural deficiency in the crown made it unsafe to use without repair. We started with a full firebox cleaning: removed compacted ash from the floor, scraped 2nd-degree creosote from the smoke chamber walls, and cleaned soot staining off the firebrick face. Then we moved to the crown. We removed the failed original pour, applied a bonding agent to the existing brick, and cast a new crown with a proper drip edge and slope that directs water away from the flue tile. The repaired joints were repointed with Type S mortar rated for high-heat applications. Total time on site was about six hours.
